Liturgical Year

The Liturgical Year begins with the first Sunday of Advent and ends with the feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. The six seasons include Advent, Christmas, Lent, Sacred Pascal Triduum, Easter, and Ordinary Time. Additionally, each month we focus on a specific devotion and celebrate the lives of saints.

Saints
What are the six Liturgical Seasons?
- Advent Advent starts the new liturgical year as we prepare 4 weeks before celebrating Jesus' birth
- Christmas We recall the Nativity of Jesus Christ and his manifestation to the peoples of the world
- Lent We fast, pray and give alms for 6 weeks prior to Easter
- Sacred Pascal Triduum These are the holiest "Three Days" of the Church's year, where we recall the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus
- Easter We joyfully celebrate for 50 days the Lord's resurrection from the dead and his sending forth of the Holy Spirit
- Ordinary Time For 4-8 weeks after Christmas Time and six months after Easter Time, we consider the fullness of Jesus' teachings and works among his people
What do the different liturgical colors represent?
- Violet
- White
- Red
- Green
- Rose

What is the difference between a feast, solemnity, and memorial?
- Solemnity
  
  A solemnity is the highest rank of celebration and is denoted by a S on the calendar. Easter, Christmas, All Saints Day, the Ascension, Corpus Christi, and other celebrations of events in our Lord's earthly life are solemnities. On these days, the Gloria and the Creed are always said. They are similar to Sundays, though solemnities are not always days of obligation.
- Feast
  
  The next tier down are feasts, denoted with an F. They include commemorating certain saints, such as the Archangels' feast or the apostles' majority. These days, the Gloria is necessary, but not the Creed.
- Memorial
  
  The majority of the saints are celebrated as memorials, which have the lowest rank. These days, the Gloria is not proclaimed. Memorials denoted with a capital M must be observed. Memorials denoted with a m are optional.
