Safety is our #1 priority, too.St. Stephen, Martyr is committed to providing a safe environment for everyone, especially our children. We believe in education that raises awareness of sexual abuse, that identifies the signs of sexual abuse, that explains how to control access to our children and vulnerable adults and that encourages responsible reporting of abuse. To achieve this goal, the Diocese of Richmond uses Virtus Training for all volunteers over the age of 18.

Important Virtus Updates
New Virtus Protocols as of July 1, 2024
- If you are 18 or over and volunteer in any capacity in the parish or wish to volunteer, you must be VIRTUS compliant. This means that you must complete a new background check every 12 months and take a refresher course if it has been longer than five years since you took the initial Protecting God's Children for Adults course.
- Please check your VIRTUS account and take whatever measures are indicated.
- If you have not taken any VIRTUS class, go to Virtusonline and register for an online session.
- For all parish volunteers, annual background checks will be required as of July 1, 2024. The diocesan-approved national search, ScreeningOne will process these.
- If an individual already has a current valid background check, then 30 days prior to the expiration of that check, a new screening must be completed. If an individual does not have a background check, then they must complete ScreeningOne upon first day of your volunteer assignment. A 30-day grace period will be allowed to complete the screening.
- Volunteers will be prompted to complete background screening via email and your VIRTUS account annually.
- Monthly bulletins will no longer be required reading.
The diocesan Office of Safe Environment has issued a new Refresher Training called "VIRTUS Healthy Boundaries for Adults: Boundary Development and Implementation" 1.0 module.- All Adult volunteers who completed the VIRTUS Protecting God's Children for Adults prior to 5 years ago are required to complete this refresher training, an online 45-minute module which will be assigned to the individual's VIRTUS account
- Ongoing refresher training will be required once every 5 years.
- Volunteers will be prompted to complete refresher training through VIRTUS.

Teen Virtus
The Diocesan Virtus Teen Program is a Safe Environment training program "Boundaries Module for Youth Who are Employees or Assisting/Volunteers" for teens ages 13 to 17 years old is available on Virtusonline.org. In this training program, "Teens will learn about maintaining appropriate boundaries, awareness of inappropriate behavior, proper reporting procedures, and an understanding that their role is not a supervisory one, but that they must always assist a VIRTUS-trained and background-screened adult."
It is recommended that all diocesan teenage volunteers complete the training, but it is not mandatory unless employed by the diocese.
