Growing in Mission.In November 2024, a core team was selected by Fr. Charles and the Parish Council Chairman to lead the parish through a 5-10 year strategic planning effort. The process has been organized into a three-phase approach and builds upon the good work and survey conducted by the Building and Grounds Committee in August 2024 that will consider the charisms of our parish, the needs of our people in the pews, and the spiritual as well as the physical needs of our community. -
What to Expect

During Phase I, input will be gathered through a variety of channels to identify key themes and initial findings that will subsequently be presented to the Parish through a town hall for validation and additional feedback later this summer. Initial input will be gathered through the following channels:
- in-person interviews and broad solicitation of input via a digital input form,
- reviewing existing data from past surveys and parish strategic planning efforts and
- exploring geographic and community-based data.

Once the major themes and initial findings are established, this information will be processed, expanded upon as necessary (which may include focus groups, additional surveys, etc.), and synthesized with spiritual discernment into 5 - 10 strategic goals.
Phase II will conclude with another town hall to review the strategic goals with the parish.

In Phase III, an action plan will be created for each goal which Fr. Charles will ultimately review and approve for implementation. The team is targeting to be done with the entire process by the start of the 2026 fiscal year.

The Survey you took in August was quantitatively based and allowed us to make statistically significant inferences about who we are. These surveys are qualitative in nature which allows us to obtain additional understanding and nuances. Both are very important.

Great question. In short, we are growing. The last strategic planning effort was in 2018. Much has changed. The Bishop is currently conducting a similar effort for the Catholic Community Foundation of the Diocese of Richmond.

That was the first step of a much larger process and was focused on facilities and quantitative measures. We are ready to mature into a more comprehensive effort.

- A measurable set of Strategic Goals.

Please participate in the surveys. The core planning team is currently fully staffed. However, it will take many more to implement and execute the action plans.

The Strategic Planning Core Team was hand selected by the Chairman of Parish Council and Fr. Charles to lead the Strategic Planning Committee for St. Stephen Martyr's 5 to 10 Year Development Plan. This committee will develop a proposal that will be reviewed by the Parish Council and Finance Council before being presented to Fr. Charles for approval.

The Strategic Planning Core Team and the 5 to 10 Year Development Plan that will result are an expansion of the good work already done by the Building and Ground Committee. The particular survey conducted by that team in August 2024 was specific to the physical campus of St. Stephen Martyr. The digital interview form that will be the cornerstone of soliciting input from the parish community seeks to take a more holistic approach to ensure we consider the charisms of our parish, the needs of our people in the pews, the spiritual as well as the physical needs of our community, and above all else, the Lord. It will be a lamppost for our ministries, our campus, and our Parish.

Clergy and staff members will all receive in person interviews from a member of the Strategic Planning Core Team. A subset of individuals identified by Father Charles will also be given the option to perform an in person interview or complete a digital interview form. All other parishioners will be encouraged to provide their feedback through the digital interview form. Paper input forms will be made available upon request.

Yes. All responses to the digital input survey will be anonymous unless you choose to provide us with your contact information should you wish to be contacted to provide any supplemental information or perspective on your answers.
