Matrimony comes about through promise made by a man and woman before God and the Church, which is consummated by the bodily union of the couple. Because God himself forms the body of sacramental marriage, it is binding until the death of one of the partners. CCC # 1625-1631
A wedding is a day. A marriage is a lifetime. To prepare for this important sacrament, here are the steps in a couple’s preparation for marriage in the Diocese of Richmond. In order to allow enough time to accomplish everything that is needed, a couple should begin the preparation process about 12 months prior to their wedding date. -

Call (757) 421-7416 to schedule the wedding date and make an appointment Deacon Kevin. He'll meet with you over 6-12 months to prepare you for this lifetime sacrament.

The couple meets with the priest or deacon to discuss the premarital inventory, and all documentation for the marriage file is finalized.

The couple begins a marriage preparation program approved by the diocese. They fill up quickly, so register soon.

Marriage in the Catholic Church is a Sacrament. With this in mind, remember as you choose musical selections that you are planning a sacrament, and the sacredness of the occasion must be maintained.

This meeting should take place early enough that the couple will have at least one month to focus on their upcoming wedding with the peace of mind knowing that everything has been arranged. It is also a good time to address any questions the couple may have from their marriage preparation program, premarital inventory, or natural family planning class.

The clergy will generally lead this rehearsal. Couples are encouraged to take an active role in planning their wedding. Planning the wedding is an opportunity for the bride and groom to express their faith.
