• When it is your turn to serve at your designated Mass, sign in on the kiosk.  If the kiosk is unavailable or inoperable, there will be a book for the EMs to sign in to.

• Dress appropriately. Clothes should be neat and clean, (please - no jeans, shorts, revealing/distracting clothes).  Serve with reverence.  Please keep this in mind even if you are not assigned as you may be asked to substitute.

• Sign in at least 20 minutes before Liturgy. This allows you to get in the proper state of mind to do your ministry.  This also allows the MC to assure all spots are filled before the start of Mass. If there are slots open for EM’s that have not signed in, the MC will start to fill those with a sub 15 minutes before Mass. If your spot has been re-assigned prior to the start of Mass, let that person do the job they were asked to do by the Mass Coordinator. There will be many more opportunities to serve. Rotate positions each time you serve so you will become familiar with all stations. There are dots on the floor as to where you should stand. If you are not scheduled, please check in with the Mass Coordinator (as they may already be looking for a substitute).

• When the Lector makes the call for silence, approximately five minutes prior to mass, the EMs are invited to join Father, Deacon and others outside of the Sacristy for a prayer.

• You may genuflect or reverently bow slightly before the Altar anytime you are not carrying the Blood or Body of Christ, such as when you come up to assist with the distribution of Holy Communion or as you leave after Communion.

• EMs will go to the of Church during Lamb of God. Line up with the EMs assigned for bread on the left side. 

• When everyone is there, bow together and proceed to the right side of the sanctuary.

• Pick up the small bottle of hand sanitizer on the way, and line up by the wall. There's a small bottle of hand sanitizer behind Father's chair. We can use the hand sanitizer while waiting. The first person just take a squirt and pass it down the line. When everyone has some, simply pass it back, or the last person can but it back behind Father's chair when you head up.

• The person first on the right will end up in the back of the line, and the bread EMs will be the first two closest to the sanctuary. Wait there (by the steps, behind Father and deacon's chairs) until Father receives his communion. 

• After Father receives his communion, line up on the sanctuary for communion. (A good cue is when Father turns to give communion to Deacon.) Proceed to your left (in front of Presider’s chair) and make a straight line parallel to the Altar on the side. Do not block the Tabernacle. The Altar servers will face you on the opposite side.

• The Presider will serve Eucharist to the AS/CB and EMs.  The Presider/Deacon will then serve the wine to all AS/CB and EMs.   All EM’s should bow giving reverence to the Eucharist and the wine.

• Father or Deacon will give you the Sacred Vessels (Ciboria or Cup). You do not take them from the Altar.

• EMs should wait for Father and Deacon to proceed to their positions prior to moving to theirs.   EMs should proceed down on both sides of the Altar, depending on where your assigned position is.  For example, if you are in the B-1 position, walk behind Deacon (or the right side of the Altar when facing the congregation) to the position nearest the choir.  After the choir is served, move to the second B-1 position to the left to continue serving

• As the parishioner approaches, look them in the eyes, do not use their name.  It is not necessary.  You only need to say one of the following:  “The Body of Christ” or “The Blood of Christ”.   

• Receiving on the tongue.  If a parishioner approaches an EM to receive on the tongue, they are to do so.  If they wish, they can use the hand sanitizer on the credence table and then return to serving.

• Place the Eucharist in the person’s hand. Place the Host reverently in the hand as best as possible. Try not to ‘drop’ the Host into the hand.

• All parishioners must consume the Host when it is administered. Extraordinary Ministers may not be able to see if someone does not consume. But wine ministers can and should stop anyone who appears to be carrying the Host back to their seat and ask them to consume it.

• If a Host is dropped, please pick it up and consume it, or the communicant may consume it if they pick it up. If not consumed, you can put it in the palm of your hand that holds the Ciborium. Do not put the dropped Eucharist back into the Ciborium.  If there are fragments of the Precious Body on the floor because the Host has broken, place a purificator over the Precious Body and step in front of it to protect it. Do not allow anyone to step on or walk over the Precious Body. Please inform the Deacon or Priest after you have distributed Holy Communion so they can purify the area.

• If a small child is with a parent or family member, offer Eucharist to the adult first, then you may offer a blessing to the child. We do this by saying “God Be With You”, “Peace Be With You,” “Christ be with you”.  DO NOT TOUCH THEM OR MAKE THE SIGN OF THE CROSS. If an adult comes up with their arms crossed, do the same.

• If your number of Hosts is getting low, say ‘just a moment’ to the parishioner and go to the nearest Priest or Deacon to get additional Hosts.

• If you are finished serving bread or wine to the side sections, you can step towards the front to help with the center sections. When you are finished serving (the cup is empty or you are finished serving the bread), you can proceed directly back to the credence table. You do not need to wait for the other EMs to be finished. If you are a cup minister and you are finished, you can cross the altar to go back to the credence table to avoid disturbing the people still receiving. Try to go down the side near the credence table and around to go back to your seat to avoid multiple crossing of the altar (if possible). 

• Keep your purificator folded and use the long edges.  After someone receives the wine, wipe both the inside and outside of the cup by sweeping the purificator along that edge, and then turn the cup slightly at the same time. Do this after each serving. Watch closely for dripping wine down the side of the cup. Make sure all drips are wiped with the purificator, so they do not hit the floor or make the cup slippery.  Use caution when administering wine to children and the elderly. They may need assistance and you want to be sure to keep a good grip on the wine cup if the parishioner is frail or needs assistance to take a sip of wine.

• If there is a spill from a cup, say ‘just a moment’ to the parishioner, unfold your purificator completely, and place your purificator on the spill and prevent anyone from stepping on it. Get another purificator from an Altar server or from the credence table and continue serving the wine.

• Intinction (bread dipping) is not used. If someone attempts to dip their bread into the cup, please cover your cup and let them know it is not allowed.

• Walk slowly and deliberately to prevent spillage over the side of the cup.

• When you are finished serving bread or wine to the side sections, you can step towards the front to help with the center sections. When you are finished serving (the cup is empty or you are finished serving the bread), you can proceed directly back to the credence table. You do not need to wait for the other EMs to be finished. If you are a cup minister and you are finished, you can cross the altar to go back to the credence table to avoid disturbing the people still receiving. Try to go down the side near the credence table and around to go back to your seat to avoid multiple crossing of the altar (if possible). Place the cup on the credence table with the purificator on top. Never put the purificator stuffed inside the cup. You may return to your seat.

• If someone needs to be served at his/her seat, a hospitality person will get a bread minister’s attention and lead him/her to the seated parishioner. Cup ministers should be watchful of this also and assist. Not everyone wants wine, but it should be offered, so if it is in your area, or you are directed by Hospitality to move to serve a parishioner, then do so.

The scheduling is done via software specific to Liturgical Ministry thru MSP. The schedule is usually done in 3-4 month increments and volunteers are selected by MSP. It is your responsibility to check your schedule. If you cannot attend you need to request a sub.
